What is the difference between a WAN and an SD‑WAN?

A WAN (Wide Area Network) is the traditional way to connect multiple sites, usually using fixed circuits like MPLS. It’s reliable but often rigid and expensive.

SD‑WAN (Software‑Defined WAN) does the same job, connecting sites, users and apps, but adds intelligence and flexibility. It uses software to steer traffic over the best available path (broadband, fiber, 5G, even satellite) and applies security policies consistently across the network.
